Description:

Working draft policy here:

The Falmouth Land Trust believes that access to nature and undeveloped lands is a human right and essential to human health. To this end, it has committed itself to the highest standards, the Land Trust Standards and Practices of the Land Trust Alliance.  As such, we look for guidance to Standard 1, Ethics, Mission and Community Engagement, Section C, Community Engagement, of the Land Trust Standards, which reads as follows:

Develop an inclusive, welcoming organizational culture that respects diversity. Seek to engage people who are broadly representative of the community in which the land trust works and foster opportunities to connect them with the land. Develop an understanding of the land trust’s community, and communicate the land trust’s work, services, and impact in a manner that resonates with and engages that community. Build relationships with community leaders and other stakeholders in the land trust’s community.

The Falmouth Land Trust recognizes the importance of diversity, inclusion, and equity, and pledges itself to become a resource for all people and all groups wishing to access, enjoy, and protect natural lands. To reach this goal, the Land Trust Board adopts the following working policy, to be implemented this year and to be reviewed 12 months from now for progress and for adoption as a formal land trust policy.

The policy has three main elements:

Deepening our understanding of indigenous history

Fostering a welcoming environment for historically underserved populations, and

Building a more inclusive and stronger organization.

Action Items:

Actions to promote these goals might include, but are not limited to,

Learning opportunities for board and staff members

Speakers for the community from Wabanaki communities

Outreach to local organizations such as those serving people of color, indigenous people, low-income people, and people with disabilities,

Increasing diversity of FLT partners, volunteers, staff, and board members.
