Land Conservation

The Land Trust Alliance says it best: “Every piece of natural land that we protect means less carbon dioxide being pumped into the air we breathe, healthier soil for our crops, cleaner water from our taps, and more protected habitats for plants and wildlife. And land trusts are working to ensure that everyone has access to natural areas, close to home. Places where children can play, friends can connect and people can find calm from a stressful day.”

FLT is committed to protecting forests, farms, fields, and waterways in Falmouth ‘til forever. We do that by directly purchasing properties (called fee-owned properties) or working with landowners to implement conservation easements. As an accredited land trust, FLT has proven that we have sound finances, practice ethical conduct and responsible governance, and can ensure lasting stewardship of both fee-owned and easement properties. Stewardship

FLT's land stewardship program works to conserve Falmouth's natural character and beautiful landscape. This includes managing properties we own and working with private landowners who wish to protect their properties for future generations. Whether the property is a working farm, a bird sanctuary, or a neighborhood preserve, there’s a lot that goes into keeping the land beautiful and accessible. FLT staff and volunteers build and maintain trails, remove invasive species, issue hunting permits, monitor properties for any issues, and much more! Public Recreation

Many of our properties are open to the public for walking, hiking, biking, bird watching, and other nature study. A few properties are also open for hunting and fishing. Please visit our properties page to learn more about what activities are allowed on each property.

Education

FLT is passionate about getting community members outside to learn about local plants, animals, and land history. We partner with local organizations, businesses, and Falmouth Community Programs to provide tailored programming such as guided walks or presentations. FLT also partners with local schools to provide hands-on outdoor activities related to pond ecology, invasive species, and much more during school, after school, and on field trips. We collaborate with a Maine Master Naturalist and other local experts to implement some of this programming.
